Angel is an engineer at Exxon here in Houston, and has been a friend of mine for about 11 years. Angel was born in the Dominican Republic, and came to the United States when he was six years old. His parents and his younger sister came here as well, his sister was only 3 years old. They made Brooklyn, New York their home. Angel then moved to Houston at 23 and has lived here for 11 years. When I talk to Angel about his language acquisition he tells me that he believes he picked up the language quickly because of his young age at the time. He also attributes his learning to elementary school where he was placed in ESL classes from 1 st through 6 th grade.
